In late 2023, The NSW Koala Strategy funded the Guula (Koala) Country Program in collaboration with Taree Indigenous Development and Enterprise (TIDE) and Hunter Local Land Services (HLLS). The regional partnership aims to empower local Aboriginal communities to develop their own strategic actions and Cultural priorities for koala conservation.
A critical component of the project is using Local Ecological Knowledge (LEK) to improve koala habitat and revive the local koala story. This will be facilitated by a series of Cultural burns led by community members on sites in the Wallingat, Kiwarrak, and Comboyne Areas of Regional Koala Significance (ARKS). These burns will not only reignite a traditional practice, but improve movement of koalas through the landscape by removing thick understory that chokes up Country.
